Yes it is true.  The US Navy will attempt to shoot down a failed spy satellite this week. Isn’t this a measure of last resorts? Didn’t this satellite cost a huge sum of money to begin with? Of course it did.  But NASA refused to take steps months ago when it could have conceivably sent a shuttle up to repair the machine and so now they are left with absolutely no options.

The 5000 pound satellite malfunctioned immediately after its launch in December of 2006.  And so without even spending notable time in space and without having completed its mission and with a full tank of fuel it is coming back to Earth.
